We all have empty food jars from jams, mayonnaise, etc. Instead of throwing them away let's make something out of them!
Here are 10 hassle-free and affordable ideas to lighten up your kitchen with the use of food jars! They can be used for the kitchen itself or as a center piece for occasions.
1. Display pasta in beautiful layers.
Use various small pasta shapes like shell or bowtie pasta. Don't use long pasta like spaghetti or fettuccini--for sure they won't fit in your jar. Then layer them in alternating colors and shapes. You may also use dried beans in between layers like red kidney beans, white kidney beans and mungo beans.
2. Display dry powders for baking or cooking.
You can also use different kinds of "powders" used in baking from flour to cacao powder to powdered sugar. You can even layer spice powders. Have a jar with all the powders in a 5-spice mix like cinnamon, cloves, fennel seed, star anise and Szechuan peppercorns. If you don't have them in powder form, make sure to have the smallest particle at the bottom which is the cinnamon powder. Observe in hotels, you'll see a lot of these beautiful displays!
3. Create a candy jar for your kids.
Candy jars are also another hit especially among kids! Collect all your kids' favorite candies and place them all in a food jar. You can even use it to reward them after a good day in school!
4. Create a classic cookie jar.
Be simple. Use it as a cookie jar. Sometimes, we have a lot of things in the kitchen for display but it can also be better if things are consumable so that we can change them once in a while.
5. Preserve food.
You may also use these jars to preserve food and showcase it and use it after, of course.
6. Use it as a centerpiece.
Got fresh flowers? Why not arrange them in a food jar and place it at the center of the table for a more intimate table set-up! You can even have a mini "garden" inside the jar. Remember nature is very relaxing! You may also opt to use store-bought long lasting flowers as an alternative.
7. Use them as elegant candleholders.
Throw in some sand or pebbles, and then light up a candle for special occasions. Or simply turn it upside down and placed the candle on top of these jars.
8. Create your own mini aquarium.
Choose small fishes that are easy to maintain and care for.
9. Use it for daily inspiration!
Fill it up with Bible quotes, motivational quotes or even jokes rolled up and see what you've got for a good start everyday!
10. Create a one-of-a-kind picture frame.
Simply insert your favorite photo inside and add rocks to put weight on the jar and decorate the jar outside with ribbons or fabric paint. This can not only be a decoration but can be used as a gift as well. Keep memories locked in jars!
These are just a few ideas but always remember to keep your imagination alive!
