REFRESH THE LOOK OF YOUR HOME IN 2016
New Year has always been synonymous with new beginnings. It has become ritualistic for individuals to renew themselves through lifestyle changes, makeovers, and other means of self-improvement—and with good reason. New Year is a symbolic time of year for change, for looking back at the year that was and looking forward to the year that will be with a renewed sense of hope. Extending this sense of renewal and change to one’s home is just as significant. The home is where we live and grow as people. After all, it is as they say, where our heart is. Refreshing our home for the New Year is a great way to prep ourselves for 2016 and here’s how you can do it!
De-clutter your shelves
The first step to refreshing your abode is to clean up and organize. When we pare down our belongings to only the items that are essential and those that make us truly happy, we create a feeling of lightness both on the literal and spiritual level. Let go of outdated pieces that take up space, and donate old but still useful items like books and clothes. Keep classic and investment pieces, like that statement wall mirror or solid wood side table. Next, conduct a general cleaning and re-stock cleaning materials and equipment as needed, such as a new mop, vacuum, or steam cleaner. Lastly, conduct any repairs. A newly decorated home won’t look too pretty if your ceiling is leaking.
Re-think your canvas
Think about the colors and textures that dominate your floors, ceilings, and walls. If you prefer a clean and minimalist look, go for simple white washed, cream, or dove grey walls. If you love pops of color, accent one wall with a bright hue. The New Year is also a good time to re-evaluate your largest furniture pieces. For example, if your family just welcomed a new baby last year, it might be time to add ottomans to your family room or to move up to a three-seater or L-shaped sofa.
Decorate with pieces you love
Remember, you need not spend good money on a total interior overhaul. Even if you opt not to re-paint your walls, updating your decorative pieces is a great way to refresh the look of your home. In the living room, mix solid and patterned throw pillow covers alongside decorative candles, faux plants, and groupings of ceramics in various heights. Modernize your kitchen with sleek, black appliances, one of the year’s predicted trends according to Elle Décor. As a counterpoint to the dark elements, punctuate your kitchen with bright tableware, cutlery, and drinking glasses. Create a relaxing bedroom with new sheets, duvets, throws, or drapes. Pantone’s 2016 colors of the year, Serenity and Rose Quartz, a cool blue and rose respectively, are great choices for imparting that tranquil vibe. Lastly, don’t forget the bathroom, the smallest yet one of the most useful rooms in the house. Choose a great decorative mirror to serve as the pièce de résistance.
Remember, home design trends come and go, but New Year is a great opportunity to experiment with new styles. However, at the end of the day, it will always be about the look that appeals to you the most. New Year should always be about becoming the best person you can be, and your home aesthetic is one way to express this.
