Whether you find yourself hosting an impromptu small dinner party for friends or gathering around the dining table with your family for a scrumptious meal, the dining table is where we all gather together to share stories, laughter and unforgettable memories. It is for this same reason that we shouldn't take for granted setting the scene for the perfect dining ambiance.
Here are some tips on how to create an elegant everyday tablescape for your home:
1. Table cloth
Start off by choosing a table cloth that best suit your style for your tablescape's backdrop. There are two things to consider when choosing the right table cloth for your table setting. You can either use a monochromatic table cloth or a table cloth with a pattern design. Either way, it is always best to use a table cloth that is full skirted for a more elegant feel.
2. Table runner and Table napkins
Remember your table cloth serves as your blank canvas. It would be best to do some contrasts when choosing your table runner and napkins. A pattern design would work best for a monochromatic table cloth, while a monochromatic table runner and napkins would stand out on a pattern design table cloth.
For a more cohesive look, try to find a table runner that matches the table napkins in terms of design and color. Do a simple rectangular table napkin fold and set it between the salad plate and the dessert plate.
3. Plate Charger
Use a plate charger instead of placemats. These would certainly make your tablescape look more elegant than just using everyday placemats.
4. Three types of Plates
On top of the plate charger, choose coordinating plates in 3 different sizes (A dinner plate, salad plate and dessert plate) and stack them one on top of the other starting from the biggest to the smallest for the plate setting.
Choose silverware that are a bit more special than everyday silverware. Perhaps those which have smooth, classic lines and a bit heavier to complement your elegant everyday tablescape. Set both the dinner fork and salad fork on the left side of the plate. The dinner knife and table spoon on the right side of the plate. A dessert spoon, with the handle facing right, is set on top of the dessert fork with the handle facing left is placed horizontally on the top portion of the plate setting.
6. Use goblets instead of glassware
Here's the fun part, use a water goblet instead of your normal water glass and perhaps an extra wine goblet, just in case you like to drink wine with your meal. Place drinking goblets at the top right of the dinner plate, above the knives and spoons.
7. Floral centerpiece
Choose a low floral centerpiece for an unobstructed view with other people on the table. Choose flowers that are either contrasting in color or one that complements the table cloth and table runners.
To set the mood, use a lamp on the side of the table or unscented tea light candles and place them in glass candle holders for a 4-seater table setting (or less). If the setting is for more than 4 persons, use overhead lighting that can warmly illuminate the entire table.
Start creating your own elegant everyday tablescape and enjoy great dining experiences with your family and friends in the comforts of your own home. But most importantly, don't forget to have fun!
